It's been a _hot minute_ since I've played a Tower Defense game; they were all the rage 10 years ago, but seem to have fallen off a bit. This one does things a bit different.
Beyond the cyberpunk/tech theming, this is the first tower defense game I've played where the stage itself is on a sort of "conveyor," staged between your vulnerable point (on the left) and the source of incoming nasties (on the right).
Battle to the end of the stage, don't take too many hits, and destroy the gates to proceed!
The UI is pretty, but not especially self-explanatory. The Tutorial is a good challenge level for a first playthrough, but it doesn't take much time to explain un-intuitive (or even transparent) mechanics. This is a story-rich space adventure CRPG which very successfully chases the retro aesthetic and mechanics of 90s-era role-playing games. Absolutely gorgeous; a very monochrome LCD meets FATE dice sort of affair.

At some point in the past I picked this one up for streaming and somehow it fell off my list! Recently rebuilt/prioritized the upcoming games list, and decided to push this one to the top.
Glad I did! The game and gameplay are beautiful. The dialogue is _corny_, but **Jack Move** _owns_ it and doesn't go with half measures. Data and software as a MP and magic analogue is surprisingly fun -- and while it _is_ mostly an analogue, the difference allows for some interesting mechanics.

I've never seriously been one for metroidvanias, but this takes the cake. The Steam listening shows as *Overwhelmingly Positive*, and it's apparent at every turn why. The game _perfectly_ falls into the groove of the era it's inspired by, and it's a joy to play.
Beyond the aesthetics, it's just **fun**. The puzzles are challenging and varied, but not so much that you're beating your head against the wall. There's always something new to find or old ground to re-tread. Beat 'em ups aren't usually my style -- at least not since the Simpsons arcade machine tried to eat my savings via quarters as a kid, but this one is surprisingly good. Fantastic voice acting, interesting story that works and gets out of the way, and fluid controls.

Mek and I have been anxious to play this one since well before it launched -- and then somehow, as-ever, life got in the way of actually *playing* it once it did.
Cheerfully, the tone and tenor of the previous CK games is maintained throughout this title as well, with the puzzles prioritizing clear communication over grinding technical difficulty. Astarael and I continued our game progression a bit on this stream, chipping away at both story and character unlocks. We're making it to the Underking more consistently, and we even got close to dropping him, but we're both whiffing the parries too frequently to survive the fight.

As alluded to in the intro, Sage and I have been planning on playing this one, but we're both the kind of people that try to hold off until there's a good sale going on, and Split Fiction has just been one of those titles that holds on for dear life.
Damn, though, am I glad to finally be playing it.
